Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park

This 15-acre park features a maze of concrete paths winding through a long patch of shaded forest. The footpaths snake along the gurgling waters of Bushy Dell Creek and the man-made waterfalls added by real estate magnate Frank C. Havens when he first developed this park in 1898. It was previously the site of the Piedmont Springs Hotel, an exclusive resort that operated for 20 years until it burned down in a fire in 1892.

This park is the crown jewel of the picturesque public spaces maintained by the city of Piedmont, a small bedroom enclave of about 11,000 residents. Piedmont is completely surrounded by the larger city of Oakland, but it feels starkly different from Oakland in character. The streets and sidewalks are pristine. The multimillion-dollar homes have perfectly manicured lawns. Those who can’t afford a $2 million+ home can still visit this affluent community and enjoy its beautiful parks.

After winding forest paths, the park opens up into a sprawling grassy knoll with stately oak trees, towering redwoods, and ample space for sunny picnics. Another highlight is the enchanting Japanese Tea House, surrounded by a stunning collection of cherry blossom trees that burst into vibrant pink and white blooms each spring.

If you plan to visit, here’s my recommendation: Start at the corner of Wildwood Avenue and Prospect Road, then follow the path that descends into the park’s shady wooded area. Take the middle path that hugs the creek until it opens into the larger open space, where you can explore more or take a quick snooze on the grassy lawn. To skip the forest hike and go straight to the grassy knoll, start your visit on Highland Avenue near the police department building.

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful hike with the melody of flowing water or a relaxing afternoon basking in the sun, this park is a perfect retreat for nature lovers and city dwellers alike.
